The Chemical Hygiene Officer/Lab Coordinator will be responsible for all aspects of the University's compliance with occupational (OSHA), and environmental (EPA and RI DEM) laws and regulations as well as laboratory management in the department of chemistry. The Chemical Hygiene Officer/Lab Coordinator will maintain standards of safety, centered around chemical handling and disposal within the Department of Chemistry. This job is important in maintaining a safe environment that is harmonious with the surrounding environment. The goal is to minimize liability for the University. The Chemical Hygiene Officer/ Lab Coordinator will be expected to carry out objective risk assessments to make sure that all departments and operations are complying with the Occupational Safety Health Act and other regulations. The Chemical Hygiene Officer/Lab Coordinator will also oversee and direct the execution of the chemistry laboratory curriculum, chemical inventory, and hazardous waste management.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Chemical Hygiene Officer
Coordinate safety and environmental audits and actions to remedy faults and remediate.
Keep current by participating in ongoing professional development and training in laboratory safety and chemical hygiene to ensure the university's compliance with the Occupational safety and Health administration (OSHA) and Department of Environmental Management (DEM) rules and regulations.
Serve as the university liaison during upcoming EPA/OSHA site visits.
Help maintain a file of Safety Data Sheets and other appropriate safety documentation.
Oversee, maintain and review health and safety documentation and data.
Assist in the development and maintaining of a chemical hygiene plan.
Oversee chemical hazard training and maintain documentation for training of students and faculty, professors (full-time and adjunct faculty) and facilities personnel.
Develop and implement health and safety plans, data capture and ongoing analysis.
Set up and implement hazardous waste, wastewater or toxin management programs.
Conduct daily and weekly inspection and oversee proper hazardous waste disposal.
Weekly testing of safety showers and eye washes and other safety devices.
Working in regular conjunction with the Chemistry faculty members teaching the laboratory sections, he/she will help plan and prepare the laboratory experiments, and maintain records of needed changes in curriculum.
Assist in setting up, executing, for each lab section of General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Nursing Chemistry and upper level Chemistry courses during the academic year.
Ensures proper functioning of instrumentation used in student experiments.
Provides technical support to the chemistry faculty including maintenance and calibration of instrumentation and equipment.
Assists in hiring, training and supervision of undergraduate student employees, lab assistants and assists in the orientation and training of adjunct faculty lab instructors.
Assists with work-study time cards/students' payroll management.
Maintain and assist in ordering of chemical inventory and distribution and storage of supplies and materials.
Assists chemistry faculty members and students with instrumentation and equipment during laboratory sessions. Provides brief laboratory supervision when an instructor must leave the laboratory room. Assists faculty with the use of demo equipment.
Maintains the laboratories, stockrooms, prep room, instrumentation room and storage rooms in orderly and neat condition by cleaning and storing supplies and equipment. Monitors utilities such as deionized water, city water, compressed air, vacuum, natural gas, electricity, and ventilation; reports problems to facilities.
Keep up with trends in chemical education and assist in design and testing of new experiments.
Strategize methods of minimizing chemical waste as required by the RI Department of Environmental Management.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The chemical hygiene officer/lab coordinator may also teach one section of general chemistry lab in the fall and spring semesters. Performs related duties as assigned.
Equipment/Tools Used: Utilizes technical laboratory equipment and computers in order to perform the duties of the job.
Supervision: Under direct supervision of the Chemistry Department. Performs routine duties without receiving instruction.
A minimum of Bachelor's degree in chemistry with an emphasis on laboratory skills and instrumentation or a Bachelor's degree in a science discipline with at least one year of chemistry. Preferred: Master's degree in Chemistry or a STEM field with experience in a chemical laboratory skills and instrumentation.
