Approximately 65,000 visits occur annually including Primary Care, Urgent Care, Occupational Health and Specialty Clinics. Services are designed to minimize the impact of illness, emotional distress and injury on studies and work. Coupled with health promotion and public health programs, UHS reaches all segments of the Berkeley campus community.
Reporting to the Chief, Occupational and Environmental Health Program, the Occupational Health Physician is a Clinical Work Lead for the Occupational Health Clinic (OHC). Involves providing occupational health care to adult patients, including assessing and treating a wide variety of conditions, ailments, and injuries with emphasis on work-related injuries and illnesses. Diagnoses, manages and treats patients. Refers patients with more serious conditions to other specialists for more complex care or other health care facilities for more intensive care.
I. Exam and Diagnose Patients
Perform history, physical examination, assessment, and planning on patients who present to the OHC with complaints of a work-related injury or illness
Maintain appointment template that assures appropriate access for occupational health scheduled and walk-in patients; keep pace within appointment systems during scheduled clinic time
May evaluate patients, review clinical records and determine if appropriate treatment is being provided.
Prescribes and administers medical treatments, advises patients on how to use medications, performs select procedures; administers local anesthesia, and performs other medical functions, as authorized.
Provides appropriate referral for different specialty and/or subspecialty care as deemed appropriate for a particular clinical problem.
Reviews reports and provides consultation to mid-level practitioners.
Serves as consultant for other providers, including Medical Doctors, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, dieticians, and nurses.
Functions as a resource for consultation on complex or difficult patient cases.
Liaise with other UHS departments, as needed, regarding patient care.
II. Medical Surveillance/ Employee medical examinations
Requires knowledge of OSHA and CalOSHA requirements and other state-of-the-art Occupational medical knowledge
Perform examinations as needed
III. Expert Clinic Support
Work with the Chief, Occupational and Environmental Health Program to ensure that operations are functioning smoothly on a day-to-day basis in the Occupational Health Clinic.
Maintain professional standards for communication and documentation; practice protocol and review.
Clinical lead for Occupational Health Clinic including MD's, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Medical Assistants and administrative staff.
Perform Permanent and Stationary reports for clinic patients utilizing American Medical Association Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, 5th edition. Manage the most complex clinical cases.
Provide occupational health consultation for Urgent Care Providers; provide case
management for Occupational Health Clinic patients; coordinate clinical case management with Specialist consultants, Workers Compensation 3rd party administration, and other relevant parties.
Provide leadership in Occupational Health Clinic medical surveillance program, worker's compensation program, and Occupational Wellness Program.
Participate in relevant UHS or campus committees as assigned.
IV. Presents at educational conferences on area of specialization. Position in Occupational Health Clinic may involve teaching/ education. Professional development.
Requires knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of specialist Physician duties.

Requires knowledge of electronic/medical records systems.
Must be computer literate.
Knowledge, skills and abilities associated with the practice of occupational medicine.
Preferred to have experience with the California Worker's Compensation system.
Must be Board Certified in Occupational Medicine (as determined by the American Board of Medical Specialists), preferred; OR Board Certified in primary care specialty with additional specialized training and/or experience in occupational health.
Licenses or certifications:
Must be in possession of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California, as determined by the California Medical Board (possess a valid California medical license).
Must maintain CURES registration, BLS certification, and DEA license.
