The Department of Social Work at California State University Dominguez Hills invites applications for a Full-time position at the rank of 12-month Lecturer and Admissions and Extended Education Coordinator with the appointment starting in Spring 2019.

The Department of Social Work Program at California State University, Dominguez Hills is strategically located to focus on the diverse social service needs and problems particular to the South Bay area of Los Angeles County, a large metropolitan area, populated by a wide range of socially and culturally diverse people. Because of the diversity of the various ethnic groups and cultures, the program will prepare social work students for contextually competent social work practice, inclusive of issues of culture, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, class and gender differences, religion and the effects of bias, prejudice and institutionalized racism. These issues and concerns often obscure helping efforts if they are not appropriately recognized and dealt with in practice and in social policy development and implementation. Thus, the program aims at increasing students¿ understanding of the underlying causes resulting from intersecting effects of prejudice, discrimination, and stereotyping and teaches ways of identifying strategies and interventions for addressing these concerns and problems in social work practice.

Responsibilities:

The University's College of Extended and International Education (CEIE) manages the three-year, part-time Master of Social Work Program. The program is 60-credit hours in length with classes scheduled during fall, spring, and summer terms. Classes take place during week night evenings and on Saturdays.  The Admissions and Extended Education Coordinator will lead the collaboration between the MSW Department and CEIE, thus managing all aspects of the part-time MSW program. This position is responsible for 6 units of teaching in each term in the MSW program. 

Admissions: The Coordinator will lead all aspects of the part-time application process, which includes but is not limited to: conducting information sessions for prospective part-time applicants, participation in the graduate school recruitment fair, maintaining communication with potential and current applicants (fielding questions, following up on missing information, notification of acceptance or denial to the program), creating and maintaining a database of all applicants, overseeing the creation of individuals- application packets, and coordinating the application review process amongst faculty and staff.

Extended Education Coordination: This position requires ongoing communication and close collaboration with instructors and CEIE to ensure seamless student participation and navigation within the part-time program. This includes leading all aspects of scheduling, which includes overseeing students enrollment process. The Coordinator will create and conduct a CEIE MSW orientation for new students and create a part-time student manual.  In the summer semester, Additional duties and responsibilities: assists in the operations of Department and carries out assignments or other responsibilities assigned by the Department Chair/Director.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

• A Master of Social Work Degree from an accredited program and a minimum of two years of professional experience.
• Demonstrated commitment to social justice-based practice in an urban diverse environment.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks.
• Have strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate, interact and lead various levels of staff, sound professional judgment, and excellent problem solving and mediation skills.
• Exemplary written and oral communication skills.
• Strong leadership and administrative experience.
• Experience in teaching undergraduates from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.

Preferred /Desired Qualifications

• Displays ability to create and maintain professional relationships with constituencies (individuals, groups, communities and agencies)
• Have a record of practice serving urban diverse communities
• Working knowledge of creating and maintaining databases, including budget spreadsheets

Employment Requirement – Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.  CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

About the University

CSU Dominguez Hills holds the Carnegie classification of Master’s L and is a federally recognized Hispanic-Serving Institution.  Class sizes are small as compared with large research universities and classes are taught by the faculty, not by teaching assistants.  Many of the university’s students are the first in their families to earn a university degree.  While the university enrolls traditional full-time students, many students enroll part-time and attend late afternoon, evening and weekend classes because of work and family responsibilities.

The Location

The university is located in Carson, California, in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County.  Its 346-acre park-like campus is situated in the historic Rancho San Pedro, the oldest Spanish land grant in the Los Angeles area.  The site remained in the continuous possession of the Dominguez family for seven generations - from its inception in 1794 to its acquisition by the state of California. 

The Region

The South Bay is one of the most culturally, economically, and ethnically diverse areas in the United States, with a largely even distribution of the population with African, Asian/Pacific Islander, European, and Latino ancestry.  The university is located in the city of Carson, a city of 93,000 residents and one of the many municipalities that border the city of Los Angeles.  Cultural, performance and sports venues in downtown Los Angeles are about 15 minutes away and the South Bay beach communities are a few minutes away to the west and south.  The StubHub, a 125-acre sports center developed by AEG and home to LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer and Los Angeles Chargers, is located on the CSUDH campus.
